What Happens at Accreditation Renewal
A guide for accredited providers on what to expect at annual quality review and triennial re-accreditation — including self-assessment, continuous improvement requirements and how the renewal process works.
Accreditation Is Not a One-Time Event
Achieving CPD accreditation is an important milestone, but maintaining accreditation is an ongoing process. At CPD.me.uk, accreditation is structured to support continuous quality improvement through annual quality reviews and a full triennial re-accreditation. Understanding what is involved at each stage helps providers plan ahead, maintain their standards, and continue demonstrating educational excellence to their students, insurers and professional bodies.
The renewal structure exists because educational quality is not static. Training programmes evolve, industry standards change, and the evidence base for best practice develops over time. Renewal ensures that accredited programmes continue to meet quality standards rather than receiving a one-time endorsement that becomes outdated.
Annual Quality Review
What Is Required
Each year, accredited providers submit an annual quality return as part of the Continuous Improvement Framework. This includes a self-assessment against the accreditation standards, a student feedback summary, details of any significant changes made to the programme during the year, and any updates to tutor qualifications or teaching staff.
Self-Assessment
The self-assessment asks providers to reflect honestly on the strengths and development areas of their programme. This is not an inspection — it is a structured opportunity for reflection that forms part of the ongoing quality monitoring process. Providers who engage thoughtfully with self-assessment typically find that it helps them identify improvements that enhance both learner outcomes and their competitive position. See our guide to the Continuous Improvement Framework for more detail.
Student Feedback
A summary of student feedback collected during the year must be submitted with the annual return. This should include the number of students surveyed, the methodology used, overall satisfaction scores, and a summary of key themes from qualitative feedback. Providers are expected to demonstrate how they have used student feedback to inform programme development.
Programme Updates
Any significant changes to programme content, delivery format, assessment methods or tutor arrangements must be notified to CPD.me.uk. Minor updates that improve but do not fundamentally alter the programme can typically be reported as part of the annual return. More substantial changes — such as moving a face-to-face programme fully online — may require a separate notification and brief review.
Triennial Re-Accreditation
Full Review After Three Years
After three years of accreditation, providers undergo a full re-accreditation review. This involves a comprehensive reassessment of the programme against current CPD.me.uk standards, which may have been updated since the original accreditation. Providers submit a full application package similar to the initial application, but the review takes into account the provider's track record, annual quality returns, and evidence of continuous improvement.
Faster Than Initial Accreditation
Because established providers have a documented history of quality and the assessors can draw on three years of annual returns, triennial re-accreditation is typically faster than the original application. Providers who have maintained good standards, engaged positively with annual reviews, and demonstrated continuous improvement often find re-accreditation straightforward. The focus is on confirming that quality has been maintained and that the programme continues to meet the needs of learners.
Renewal CPD Points and Hours
At triennial renewal, CPD hours are re-assessed based on any changes to programme duration or content since the original accreditation. If a programme has been substantially expanded, the CPD allocation may increase to reflect additional genuine learning time. The educational quality assessment also takes into account improvements made during the accreditation period, which may positively affect the overall CPD allocation.
What Happens If Standards Are Not Met at Renewal
If an annual return or triennial review identifies areas where a provider has fallen short of standards, CPD.me.uk will provide written guidance on the specific issues and what actions are required to address them. Providers are given a reasonable timeframe to make improvements. Accreditation is only withdrawn if significant quality concerns cannot be resolved — and this is always preceded by clear communication and the opportunity to address issues. Providers approaching renewal who have concerns about their current standards are encouraged to contact the team in advance rather than waiting for the formal renewal process.
Planning for Renewal
The most effective preparation for renewal is consistent quality management throughout the accreditation period — not a rush of activity in the weeks before the renewal deadline. Providers who maintain their student feedback processes, keep their CPD records current, document programme improvements as they happen, and engage with the annual quality review process find renewal straightforward. See our guide to maintaining accredited status for practical advice on staying renewal-ready throughout the accreditation period.
